Health Systems Prototypes

Designing and Testing Health System Innovations Across Africa

We develop and test evidence-based health system
prototypes that transform research insights into
real-world policy and healthcare solutions.

Strengthening institutional research systems and governance.

In Kenya, Catalyze Impact has focused on strengthening the institutional foundations that support health and development research. Through targeted technical assistance, the initiative has supported universities and research institutions in improving research governance, grant management, and institutional systems.

Impact

Several universities have successfully attained Good Financial Grant Practice (GFGP) certification, setting new standards for transparency, accountability, and excellence in research administration. These improvements strengthen Kenya’s ability to translate research into effective health policies and system innovations, enabling institutions to participate more effectively in global research collaborations.

Advancing research readiness and health system decision-making.

In Ethiopia, Catalyze Impact has supported research institutions in enhancing their research governance structures and operational readiness. By providing technical support and institutional capacity development, the initiative has helped universities strengthen systems needed to manage research funding, partnerships, and knowledge generation.

Impact

Institutions supported by the initiative have also achieved Good Financial Grant Practice (GFGP) certification, reinforcing their ability to conduct high-quality research and manage international funding. These improvements strengthen the country’s research ecosystem and health system decision-making capacity, ensuring that research evidence can more effectively inform national policies and development strategies.

Maternal health policy prototypes reducing maternal mortality.

Catalyze Impact Initiative has been working in Kano and Lagos States to address Nigeria’s high maternal mortality rates through policy profiling and health systems prototyping. The initiative examined the underlying drivers of maternal deaths, including critical gaps in the Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) system, where maternal deaths are significantly underreported.
system.

 Impact

Through this work, the initiative developed evidence-based policy insights and prototype frameworks that help policymakers better understand the root causes of maternal mortality. These insights provide a foundation for targeted health interventions, improved data systems, and stronger maternal health policies with the potential to save lives and improve health outcomes across the country.
