What is GFGP?

Good Financial Grant Practice (GFGP) is an internationally recognized standard that strengthens how institutions manage research grants — from financial systems and procurement to compliance and governance.

From administrative burden to funding success.

Kenyan universities have led the GFGP transformation. Institutions such as Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) and Murang’a University strengthened financial and procurement systems, improved efficiency, and built credibility with funders. At MMUST, GFGP certification helped quadruple research funding and establish a dedicated grants office, while Murang’a University transitioned to transparent, efficient operations. Other institutions—including Zetech, Tharaka, St. Paul’s, Uzima, and African International University—are using GFGP to build research-intensive, globally competitive universities.

In Ethiopia, universities embraced GFGP to strengthen financial governance and grant management systems in line with international standards. Through the self-assessment and certification process, institutions identified system gaps, improved internal controls, and demonstrated readiness to manage large research grants—laying the foundation for increased donor confidence and sustainable research funding.
